Volunteer program details

The Conservation volunteer program is a great opportunity to explore and get to know the importance of protecting wetlands. These are among the ecosystems that are most severely impacted by even small changes in the climate and which in turn cause changes in hydrologic regimes. In particular through rising sea levels and decreased surface and groundwater levels.

An advantage of this program is that in your work you will gain a lot of knowledge and better understand the function of these types of ecosystems and improve your knowledge about the benefits of preservation.

Your work directly contributes to minimizing the environmental impact of agriculture and tourism in these unique and necessary areas for ecosystem balance!

As a volunteer of this program you will get to explore The Albufera Natural Park and other wetlands to improve the quality of the water and the ecosystems. The tasks will be:- Removal of invasive plant species and overgrown vegetation in lagoons and canals close to natural springs.

  • Planting and watering of native plant species
  • Participating in activities of restoring bird habitats
  • Dune and beach conservation
  • Turtle monitoring (only in spring and summer)
  • Flora and fauna data collection
  • Maintenance of water channels and green filters and disposal of rubbish
  • General park maintenance (clearing, painting, removal of rubbish).

The hours of volunteering are during the week from 8 am to 1 pm approximately. Evenings and weekends are free for traveling and exploring the nearby areas or other cities like Barcelona, Granada or Madrid. Our local staff are happy to give advice and help organize your trips!

Volunteers will work from Monday to Friday in the morning approximately between 8am -1pm, and will have free time the rest of the day to relax, go to the beach, join our cultural activities, explore the city, practice sports or have picnic at the amazing River Park.

Occasionally volunteers are expected to work half days on Saturdays or Sundays, but normally weekends are free and volunteers have the chance to travel to other cities like Madrid, Barcelona or Granada.

Our local staff will give advice and help organize your trips!

Volunteers will live in a fully equipped shared appartment with other volunteers and students. Host family accommodation is also available.

The landscape of the Valencian Community is dotted with hills and mountains, rivers, forests, islands and wetlands, offering incredible contrasts, like the Albufera Natural Park, the River Turia Park and Sierra Calderona. During this program volunteers will experience different Spanish ecosystems and contribute in a practical way to the conservation of the Valencia Region environment.

The volunteering Area will be mainly in the Albufera Natural Park and Marjal of Almenara. They are wetlands with a confluence of rivers adjoining kilometers of beach.

Our wetlands need you!

Albufera Natural Park is one of the most important wetland areas of Spain and one of the most emblematic and important places of Valencia because of its biodiversity and great ecological interest. Home to a wide range of wildlife, specially water, wading and migratory birds, and also species in danger of extinction, it has been declared by the European Union as a place of special protection. The Marjal de Almenara is also a protected area of high value due to the high quality of its waters.

Wetlands are threatened by the consequences of climate change, discharges of polluting water, agriculture and increased tourism, among other causes.

They are essential for life, because they provide us with fresh water, maintain biodiversity, protect us from floods and natural disasters. They are genuine natural treatment plants, store CO2, house unique flora and fauna and are essential for many economic activities.

The city of Valencia has 300 days of sunshine, a beach and is close to nature. It also has a wealth of history and culture:

  • 7 km of beach near the city plus the entire coast of the Valencian Community adjacent to other natural parks and a large marine reserve.
  • Museums, historic and avant-garde buildings such as The Museum of Arts and Sciences.
  • A very varied institutional and alternative cultural agenda with a lot of music on offer.
  • A BioParc Zoo. and the Oceanographic, one of the largest aquariums in Europe.
  • A great connectivity with other cities by bus and train.

Share apartements. Volunteers will live in a fully equipped shared apartment with other volunteers and students.

Each apartment has three or four bedrooms, one or two bathrooms and have fully-equipped kitchen, a lounge with TV, a washing machine and an iron. The expenses of water, gas and electricity are included in a normal use.

Host family accommodation is also available. Living in Spain with a family is the best way to become familiar with the Spanish lifestyle, get to know local people and practice the language. Taking half board is the best way of feeling part of the family!

The accommodation are close to the center, no more than 20 minutes away by public transport.

All extra information about the accommodation it will be in your Welcome pack 😉
